Digital inputs improved, with a slightly more three dimensional sound, but still not a world beater. I found more "fatness" to the tonal sound of the electric guitar, as well as a wider spread of the piano's image. Of the two, this was a clear preference. Sarah McLachlan, Angel, Surfacing, Arista

The B-Minor Mass recording is by no means a world-beater, but it is persuasively led by Walter Goehr (a much underrated conductor) and boasts, in addition to Simoneau and Alarie, a fine quintet of soloists (Rehfuss/Delfosse/Hoffman), as well as a surprisingly light-toned and nimble choir (though they are opaquely recorded)/5(2).

As ever, Backhaus’ Haydn is ever so listenable in its directness and virility. His performance of the F Minor Variations – a masterpiece – was new to me; how well it’s paced. Nor is it overplayed. What a pity Backhaus was never entrusted with an entire cycle. It would have been a world-beater. Under the circumstances, the sound is damn 5/5(1).
